14-19 March
Brussels commission
The MA Fine Art group was given a fantastic opportunity to paint a mural on a hotel room wall in Brussels. This was an all expenses paid trip and included a fee for the commission.
We were each asked to design a mural painting based on the theme 'Bloom'. This was to be added to a 5 x 3 m hotel room wall. We had a total of 4 days to complete the painting. I didn’t have any confidence in my ability to paint therefore I created an image on Photoshop and decided to transfer this via an OHP on to the wall.

Notes taken on the journey to Brussels:
I'm feeling a mixture of excitement and nervousness. I can't wait to see the room that I am going to be responsible for painting. I'm feeling less nervous about picking up a paintbrush and creating something that will be on display for 10 years. Even though I don’t enjoy painting, I am looking forward to the challenge.

What happened:
The painting was very precise and I found it difficult to paint the shapes, even when using a stencil. If I were to create a painting again, I would paint freehand and not set myself such an enormous task. The experience of 'being an artist' in Brussels was fantastic; we were all given free breakfast lunch and dinner and were taken out for dinner in nice restaurants and to cocktail parties. After working on the painting for two days we were asked to talk about our work to all the hotel owners and board members. The thought of talking about a painting that I had created seemed odd, as I was used to talking about video and installations. However, I dealt with this problem by telling myself to pretend the painting belonged to another artist, I felt that this mind set helped my confidence to discuss the work and its context.

Statement for painting:
Illuminating the darknessI usually call on the assistance of digital technology when creating artwork, as this is where my strengths and passion lie. This painting looks similar to a digital image and this is because it was designed using a computer graphics package. The painting was reproduced and juxtaposed onto the wall using an OHP and templates produced from card to achieve accurate lines and curves. Theories of the sublime were attached to this painting juxtaposing such apparent opposites such as light and dark. With the notion of the sublime, the light is seen as an optimistic and wonderful source, while the dark is seen as a fearful and pessimistic bully that can also encompass feelings of terror and self-preservation.This painting was created to offer comfort from the dark. In almost all cultures, there exist stories and legends warning of the dangers of nighttime. I have a fear of the dark and felt that by painting light bulbs blooming and growing towards the ceiling it would provide a positive symbol of light, illuminating the darkness, eradicating our fears.
